Studying for your green card marriage interview

On Behalf of | Oct 19, 2023 | Immigration

Marriage is to a U.S. citizen is one way that you can get a green card if you are a foreign national. As the spouse of a citizen, you can use your status to get a green card so that you can stay in the United States.

Part of this process may include going through a green card marriage interview. For other parts of the immigration process, such as taking the test to become a citizen, you can study in advance. It is undeniably harder to study for a green card marriage interview but you can be better prepared by knowing what to expect.

It is a test of your relationship

The truth is that you can’t really study for this type of interview. It’s not about providing any specific information that you can learn in advance. Instead, it’s a test of your relationship that will include personal questions.

For example, the interviewer may ask you which side of the bed you sleep on and which side your spouse sleeps on. The interviewer is just looking for consistent answers. If you both say that you sleep on the left side of the bed, that’s a red flag to the interviewer because a married couple should know where their spouse sleeps. If you don’t, they may question whether or not you even live together or have a romantic relationship at all.

Other examples of questions that may be asked include:

  • Where did you meet?
  • Where did you go on your first date?
  • Where did you get married?
  • Are you planning to have children?
  • What chores do each of you do around the house?
  • Do you have any daily routines?
  • When did you meet each other’s families?

Again, it’s less about specific information and more about providing the same answers to these questions. Couples who are in a legitimate relationship should have no problem answering correctly because those answers will naturally be the same.

Of course, immigration is a complex topic, and every situation is unique. Those who are working to get a green card or otherwise change their status must be aware of all of the legal steps they need to take to reach their goals successfully. Seeking legal guidance is a good way to get started.
