The Naturalization Process

The naturalization process includes nine steps:

  1. Figure out if you are already a citizen. At times, people have citizenship by birth or derived from a parent and are unaware of it.
  2.  Review and make sure you meet the citizenship eligibility requirements.
  3. Complete form N-400 (Application for Naturalization).
  4. Submit form N-400 (Application for Naturalization) to the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). You must also pay your application fees.
  5. Attend your USCIS-assigned biometrics appointment.
  6. Attend your USCIS interview.
  7. Obtain a decision from the USCIS. They may grant or deny your application. In certain instances, they may also require you to submit additional documents.
  8. Get notice to take the Oath of Allegiance.
  9. Take the Oath of Allegiance at your naturalization ceremony. For Cordele residents, these ceremonies will likely occur at the Middle District Courts in Albany or Macon.
